New market study, "Romania Power Report Q3 2011", has been published

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 08, 2011 – The new Romania Power Report from BMI forecasts that power consumption will rise from 49.1Wh in 2010 to 56.0TWh by 2020, representing average annual growth of 1.34%. After power industry usage and system losses, we see a surplus supply rising from the estimated 5.5TWh level seen in 2010 to 9.6TWh by 2020, assuming 1.9% average annual growth in power generation during the period.

Romanian power generation in 2010 is put by BMI at 54.6TWh, having slipped somewhat from the depressed 2009 level of 54.8TWh. BMI is forecasting an average 1.8% annual increase to 59.8TWh between 2011 and 2015. Thermal generation, comprising coal, gas and oil, is expected to increase by an average annual rate of 2.3% during the pe trash bins riod to 2015.

We expect gas-fired power generation to climb 1.5% per annum between 2011 and 2015, with an average annual growth rate of 1.6% forecast to 2020. The share of total Romanian power generation should decrease from 15.1% to 14.7% by the end of the forecast period. We expect the fuel's market share to be 34.9% by 2015, firing an estimated 20.9TWh. By 2020, the market share of coal-fired generation is put at 36.9%.

Nuclear power generation is one of the growth areas for the Romanian electricity sector. Expansion of existing capacity should take generation from an estimate 11.0TWh in 2010 to at least 14.3TWh by 2020, with the nuclear share of overall generation rising from 20.2% to 21.7%. In 2010, hydro-electric power generation will have been an estimated 16.4TWh, forecast to reach 17.0TWh by 2015. The share of power generation in 2010 was an estimated 30.1%, and we see hydro having a 28.4% market share by 2015. It is forecast to fall further to 25.6% by 2020.

Romania holds fifth place in BMI's updated Power Business Environment Ratings, behind Poland and ahead of Hungary. The score reflects a high proportion of renewable energy, growing demand and progress in establishing a competitive landscape. Over the medium term, Romania is likely to be left further behind by Poland, Turkey and Russia.
